To transport you back in time to Paris of 1793, we've drawn on the aesthetics of Revolutionary France. The art reflects the conflict itself:  the Baroque flamboyance of the Ancien Regime, versus the Puritanical austerity of the radicals, with the moderates caught in the middle.

Paris, 1793. Four years since the fall of the Bastille, and things are turning ugly. King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette face the guillotine. Rival revolutionaries have split into competing factions. As France descends into civil war, the heroes of the revolution (Robespierre, Danton, Marat, La Fayette) turn on each other. The infamous Reign of Terror begins. The guillotine is working overtime. Your goal is to survive. 

How To Play

The Terror features 90 real historical figures who you'll find mentioned in any good history of the French Revolution. Each character is represented on a large ‘tarot’ card, given a star-rating (indicating their importance), and sorted into the relevant warring faction, with their role in the revolution described in a headline biography. They range from the Girondin heroine Charlotte Corday, who stabbed Jean-Paul Marat in his bath, to the ill-fated Malesherbes, who, before he was executed, was forced to watch his daughter and grand-daughter go the guillotine. Each card carries a contemporary portrait of that person, licensed from one of 20 major galleries, museums and collections.

At the beginning of each game, each player is a given a secret mission. You must achieve your ends while concealing your intentions.

No-one was safe in the Terror, and no-one is safe in our game. You operate in the shadow of the guillotine. To survive, you must denounce others on suspicion of counter-revolutionary sympathies or activities, and send your rivals to the guillotine.

True democracy was suspended during the Reign of Terror. But there were still votes, among deputies of the National Convention, and, of even greater importance, among the members of the terrifying ‘Committee of Public Safety’. These votes are needed for certain actions, including the denunciation and execution of major figures.

To survive, you must operate anonymously and discreetly. Conceal the identity of allies and also enemies. The masking of characters adds an unsettling, and sometimes devastating twist to the gameplay.

Protection comes at a political price, but you will need to confer it on key allies, especially as the game proceeds and the blood-letting escalates.

Final Design

We’re still making small refinements as we move from prototype to production, so some colours, materials, artwork or component details may change slightly. Any changes will be made with the aim of improving the final game.

International Editions

At this stage The Terror is being published exclusively in English, but we’re hoping to produce at the very least a French language edition within the next year or two (hopefully to be followed by a Spanish edition before long).

We are however planning to create free to download foreign language editions of the rulebook in French, Spanish, and German in time for the game’s official release.
