Diatoms - A Game of Microscopic Proportions
A puzzly tile-placement, pattern-making game based on the obscure Victorian art form of creating microscopic mosaics out of algae.

Backer
Diatoms is a stunning, puzzly, tile-placement, pattern-making game where you create your very own beautiful mosaic out of single-cell algae.
In Diatoms you take on the role of Victorian naturalists who practice the real (though obscure) art of creating microscopic mosaics. Explore the algae waters, collect shimmery diatoms, and arrange them on your luxurious dual-layer microscope slide board. Art and science may be their own reward, but if your mosaic pleases the judges the best, you'll also collect the first place ribbon at today’s exhibition!
Diatoms was honored to win the 2023 Cardboard Edison award for best unpublished board game. We are excited to be bringing this award-winning, beautiful, thinky game to your table!

How To Play
Want to try the game now? There is a public demo available on Screentop during the campaign: https://screentop.gg/@ludoliminal/Diatoms-demo. (Backers at the Digital Diatoms tier and above will get access to a backer-edition on Screentop.)
Solo Variant
In Commissions, the in-box solo variant for Diatoms, you explore the algae pond to find diatoms just like in the main game. But rather than pleasing the panel of judges, you've been "commissioned" to create a diatom mosaic with particular requirements. Each commission is a puzzle to solve and each time you return to the algae pond, your diatom-hunting luck may change! Create the commissioned mosaic as required without squandering too many diatoms to successfully complete the commission.
Diatoms will ship with a solo campaign of 36 commissions and a log to track your level of success as establish your reputation as a premier diatomaceous artist. The game also includes a Beat-Your-Own-Score-style log for each of the Guest Judges for solo play that mirrors the standard 2-4 player game.
(If you're curious to give Commissions a spin, there are four demo prototype puzzles in the public demo on Screentop: https://screentop.gg/@ludoliminal/Diatoms-demo and there are 30+ Commissions available in the Screentop Backer Edition, if you become a Digital Diatoms backer or higher.)

A Lost Victorian Artform
Diatom mosaics are real! The creation of these tiny mosaics of painstakingly-arranged algae cells was a practice of scientific art that peaked during the Victorian era of the late 1800s. Individuals would create these miniature arrangements and sometimes sell the slides and photographs to wealthy naturalist collectors.
Check out the short video below featuring the most prolific modern-day practioner, the late Klaus Kemp, and read more about diatom mosaics here and here.

The Words We've Been Waiting To Say! ? June update for Diatoms
2024-06-18 06:00:15Hi Folks - we won't bury the lede this month: Games are being printed!?
As usual, short notes on top while more deets can be read further below.
Don't miss scrolling down for the pretty pictures too!
Short notes:
?Mass production of Diatoms is underway! We expect games to be complete at the end of July, which means the shipping process will begin in August. For the majority of games, the first step in shipping is be freighted across the ocean on a boat, which can take a couple months. We expect most folks will be getting their games by early October but we'll continue to update you each month.
?Last call for game and tile orders! We've been leaving the door ajar to the pledge manager for latecomers while we were still finalizing the print run, but that door will 100% CLOSE on June 29th, end-of-day. After that there will be very limited opportunity to get Diatoms, particularly outside the US, until sometime in 2025 (unless you happen to be in the vicinity of one of our select list of retail backers - thank you, retail backers! ?) We've also already sold through more than 2/3rds of the wooden tiles add-on so that will have extremely limited availability after the PM closes and is not planned for retail release.
?Translations are underway! Thanks to a lovely team of volunteers, we have several digital translations planned to be ready by the time games arrive. I can say that we'll definitely have French, German, and Dutch. More details on other possible languages can be found below! Interested in getting involved? Message us!
?Maybe you want to hear more behind-the-scenes tidbits from Diatoms manufacturing? I talk a little about the manufacturing side of making games in a recent episode of the Building the Game podcast with fellow Designers-turned-publishers, Emily Vincent, founder of Pink Hawk Games and Kirsten Lunde, founder of Looking Glass Workshop.
?Keep scrolling! The only other thing I have further this month is more photos and video of the game, because it's totally gorgeous. We can't stop playing with it and we can't wait for your copies to arrive at your door.
More Details
Mass Production
We officially gave the for-real, final go-ahead for printing on June 3rd! Latest update from our manufacturing partner is that everything is going smoothly. What happens next? Mostly we wait. Once the pieces are printed, the manufacturing team will assemble one copy and send to us to check. This "first-off-the-line" copy will be the final inspection before the rest of the games are assembled. Then it's all about the shipping.
Translations
We've already got French, German, and Dutch translations mostly drafted, with proofing just starting. We also have at least one translation volunteer for Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Japanese, and Hungarian, though we could use more support for those languages. We have interest in an Italian and Hebrew translation from our translation survey but no volunteers to help translate those as of yet.
Seriously, have you seen this game you ordered??!!
More low-key totally-home-shot footage of Diatoms the Beautiful Board Game.
As one of our Instagram followers commented last week- is this possibly the most gorgeous board game box cover ever? Major Kudos to Diatoms' Illustrator, Nim Ben-Reuven.
I've been relaxing by replaying random Commissions from the game each day. Here was the beautiful rainbow, appropriate for Pride month! ?️?
Who does it best? Wood or Chipboard? I honestly can't decide between the soft, buttery feel and velvety shimmer of the chipboard diatoms or the bright glimmer and clickety-clack sounds of the wooden tiles. I love them both!
You can't resist picking up this gold-foiled lens!
Combined, these pieces make for a gorgeous table spread full of victorian sci-art vibes.
Okay, I'll stop :)
Thank you for reading this update. See you next month! ?
~ Sabrina
