Each Fog of War tile is numbered on one side, making it easy to set up, pack away, and transport your maps. Lay out your full map in advance, cover it with the Fog of War tiles in order, and stack them numerically when storing or moving them. This system ensures quick reassembly at your next session, whether you’re playing at home or on the go!

Tile Design Deep Dive

Hexagons vs Squares

A bold step away from the gridlock.

Dungeons & Dragons has long relied on square grids—and for good reason. They’re simple, familiar, and easy to count. But square grids come with baggage: awkward diagonal movement, inconsistent range calculations, and forced, boxy environments that don’t always match the worlds we imagine. 

Why Hexagonal Grids

True Movement — No More Diagonal Weirdness

In a standard square grid, diagonal movement is technically allowed—but it breaks consistency:

The first diagonal move counts as 5 feet, but the second one counts as 10 feet, and then it alternates: 5, 10, 5, 10… This “5-10-5 rule” is a patchwork fix to reflect that diagonal movement should technically cover more distance (about 7.07 ft if we’re being precise). It works, but it’s clunky. Players constantly miscount. Movement feels gamey, not intuitive.

Hex grids fix this.

Every direction on a hex grid is equal—one move is always 5 feet, whether you’re moving forward, sideways, or at an angle. It simplifies combat, speeds up play, and removes the constant mental math.

So instead of asking, “Wait, was that 25 or 30 feet?”, your players can just move, strategise, and stay immersed in the action.

The limitations of square grids go beyond just movement mechanics. Line of sight, area-of-effect spells, and melee engagement zones often involve tricky edge cases and ambiguous rulings, especially when characters are positioned on corners or diagonals. These cases are all more consistent and easier to interpret on a hex grid.

Why Hexagonal Tiles?

Hexagonal tiles don’t just look better—they build better.

Unlike square tiles, which connect on only four sides, hexagonal tiles connect on six, unlocking a far greater range of layout possibilities. This extra connectivity means more branching paths, smoother curves, and dynamic map structures that simply aren’t possible with rigid square layouts.

• More Creative Freedom: Six connection points per tile give map creators exponentially more ways to build. Create winding caverns, natural waterways, or spidering dungeon corridors that feel alive—not just stacked blocks.

• Natural Geography: Square tiles inherently create boxy, rigid layouts—great for city blocks, but not for nature. Real-world terrain like caves, rivers, and coastlines don’t form neat right angles, so forcing them into square grids often looks artificial and awkward. Hex tiles, on the other hand, allow for smooth, flowing shapes that mimic the curves and irregularities of real landscapes. They’re ideal for creating winding paths, jagged cliffs, meandering rivers, and any environment where organic, natural design matters.

With Realm Brew, the shift from squares to hexes isn’t just aesthetic—it’s transformative.

Size & Form

Each Realm Brew tile is designed with precision and immersion in mind, scaled perfectly to standard RPG measurements.

This means each hex tile represents a 20 ft wide zone, making it ideal for depicting large terrain features, rooms, or tactical zones while remaining grid-consistent with your miniatures and gameplay mechanics.

The Magnetic Locking System 🧲 ✨

Each Realm Brew tile contains six ultra-strong neodymium magnets, carefully housed within a durable structure. The tiles are constructed in two halves and then sonic welded together, encapsulating each magnet in its own cavity.

The Challenge 🏔️

Each tile features artwork on both sides, meaning the magnetic locking must align correctly no matter how it’s positioned. Standard magnets, which have a north pole on one side and a south pole on the other, would cause flipped tiles to repel rather than attract, disrupting the seamless connection.

The Solution 

We solved this with two key innovations:

1️⃣ Diametrically Magnetised Magnets – Unlike standard magnets, these have north and south poles along their diameter rather than their faces, ensuring they align properly regardless of tile orientation.

2️⃣ Floating Magnet Housing – Each magnet sits in a circular cutout, allowing it to freely rotate. This means no matter how the tiles are placed—flipped, rotated, or aligned in any direction—the magnets automatically adjust, ensuring north always aligns with south.

This innovative Magnetic Locking System guarantees that Realm Brew tiles always connect perfectly, maintaining both functionality and aesthetic appeal. No gaps, no misalignment—just effortless map-building! 🏰🔥

We didn’t want to gate parts of the system behind arbitrary milestones — that would have meant watering down Realm Brew, and that’s just not our style.

To keep costs low, shipping will be collected after the campaign in the pledge manager

We will be shipping Realm Brew worldwide. Shipping costs will be dependant on the final weight of the product and how many packages we ship. The more backers we get, the cheaper shipping will be. So, we'll collect shipping in our pledge manager to make sure you get the best deal on shipping!

Calculating and charging shipping after the campaign will allow us to negotiate with shipping providers to give you the best possible prices.
