The Preface

After 5+ years of tinkering with this game, I'm finally ready to roll the dice (see what I did there?) with a Kickstarter campaign. I'm excited and scared, but I really believe that this is a game that is easy to learn and will appeal to so many including board game enthusiasts and casual gamers alike. So, let's get to it...

The Game

In a world where dice have been taken for granted... wait... no, I don't need a corny intro like that. Simply put, Five by Five is a game about rolling and manipulating dice on a shared board to complete objectives in your hand. Completing objectives earns you points. It's that simple.

How Do You Play?

On each turn, a player will do these three things:

  • Play an action card to either place a die or manipulate dice
  • Play any completed objectives for points
  • Restock their hand with cards

Once the board is full of dice, the game ends and you tally up the points. Easy peasy!*

*There are a few more nuances in the official rules, but you get the gist!

What Do You Get?

If you back the full game, inside the shiny (okay, it's a matte finish) square box, you'll get the following:

  • 40 dice (10 of each color)
  • 60 action cards (10 of each color plus 4 of each special action)
  • 33 objective cards
  • 3 special objective cards
  • rules

Depending on the level, you'll receive a print-and-play edition that's optimized to be played with a single die.

Basic steps... 1. Play a card, 2. Grab and roll the die, 3. Place the die, 4. Play any objectives (Prototype edition shown. Actual design may differ slightly.)

What Are The Specs?

  • 2-5 players (campaign goal unlocked for 1-player mode)
  • approximately 30 minutes
  • ages 8 and up

When Will You Get It?

That's a trickier question, but here's a rough outline of the post-campaign timeline:

  • Campaign will last 45 days
  • Pledge manager will open within 3 weeks of campaign end and will be open for at least 3 weeks
  • Mass production will begin shortly after the pledge manager closes and will take anywhere from 11-14 weeks
  • Shipping from the factory will be by ship, which also takes time (estimate will be updated when details are solidified)
  • Once received locally, games will be shipped to backers (Note: While we will be eating some of the fulfillment costs, backers are responsible for paying shipping at then-current rates and any applicable local taxes.)

Why Back Five By Five?

Look, I understand there are TONS of other games to back here. The fact that you're even looking at my game means the world to me. I've been designing games for over 10 years at this point and this is my first Kickstarter (life always seems to get in the way, right?).

A successful campaign opens the door for me to explore and create more games to share with the world!

Seriously, thank you for checking out this project.

Accolades and Reviews

Five by Five is 'Community Verified' on The Game Crafter, a popular board game prototyping manufacturer and seller, receiving a score of 114 of 120 over 40 votes.

"Played this with 7, 10, and 12-year olds, along with a few adults. Took very little time to explain, and being able to play one quick game or multiple games with cumulative scoring is a big plus with different kids and social groups. Quite pleased we picked this up, and it'll be a regular in our game rotation." - Gene Z. in WI

U.S. and Canada Fulfillment Complete, Other Countries Arriving at Hubs Soon

2024-11-08 21:38:12

Hi all!

It's been a couple of weeks and I wanted to provide another update as I know you're pretty excited to get the game in your hands.

United States and Canada

If you are a backer in the United States or Canada, you should either have received your games or received shipping information for your games from Bridge. I have confirmed from Bridge that all games have been shipped out.

If you have not received your game(s) or an email letting you know that it is on the way, please reach out and I'll have a look at the records and figure out what went wrong and we'll fix it as quickly as possible.

EU and Surrounding Areas

If you are a backer in the EU or surrounding areas, please know that your games are still on a ship. That ship SHOULD be arriving in Greece on Monday, the 11th of November. Apparently, they had some issues on the high seas and it took them WAY longer to get there than anticipated. Along the way, I also learned that when I'm given an estimate, it's actually business days (or working days) instead of actual days. Either way, it's still way late.

Once it lands in Greece, it'll take 10 working days to get to Green Logistics in Poland.

I've been in contact with Green Logistics and they said that because it's a smaller order, it should be able to be fulfilled in a single day. That is promising.

Assuming all of this holds, that means that shipments from Poland will go out on the 26th and there's a chance that most of you will still eek in under the November estimated delivery date. I am trying SO HARD to get this game to everyone on time, but communication struggles and shipment delays have made this part of the journey difficult.

Australia, New Zealand, and Asia

Finally, if you're a backer in Australia, New Zealand, or Asia, your games are also taking longer than expected to arrive. I don't know what happened here with VFI, exactly, but they shipped the games to Aetherworks for fulfillment (likely because the majority are in Australia).

Back in September, I was told that the games would arrive in Australia on the 15th of October. When I didn't hear anything, I followed up on October 28th and was told that the shipment was delayed. I checked in again today and they expect it to arrive "next Monday". I did ask for clarification, but I'm hopeful that they mean the 11th of November.

Either way, I was told that they'd arrange delivery that week. If that's the case, I suspect that most games should make their way by the end of November. There might be slight delays to the handful of backers in New Zealand, Japan, and China.

I'm sorry for the delays, but I'm still hopeful that most of you will get your games during the November 2024 delivery timeline.

Review and Rate the Game on BGG

Now that the game is arriving on doorsteps in the United States and Canada (and soon in other countries), it would be incredibly helpful if you could take some time and review the game over on Board Game Geek (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/391095/five-by-five). Adding pictures helps, as well!

Wrap Up

Thank you all again for your patience as I deal with communication and freighting issues with getting games delivered around the world. It has been super exciting to know that Five By Five will be played in countries from the U.S. to Australia and many in between, but the logistics of making it happen are tricky and often out of my control. So, again, thank you all so much for hanging in there!

I hope to have you all playing Five By Five soon!

Until next time...

Tim
