13 Moons: A Celestial Adventure! 🌙

Since ancient times, people have been captivated by the moon and its endlessly changing, yet always familiar phases. 

13 Moons is a rummy style card game that wants you to be friends with the moon. It builds a real time connection with the moon through play! You'll begin to track the moon and learn about it's phases & major events. Before you know it you'll be planning your game nights in sync with the moon!

The game is always changing!  

The rules of the game are constant but the value of the cards change according to where the moon is on the day you're playing. So you're not just looking at the moon, you're playing with it!

Begin to track the moon (the ACTUAL moon!) as it moves through all 8 phases and 5 of its major events. Gain points by playing sets & syncing with the moon.

Play Summary

Easy to play!

* Sync- Establish which phase the moon is in (AKA) bonus card for the day!

1. Draw- Draw a card either from Draw Pile or the Discard Pile.

2. Meld- Place a single run of 3 or 4 cards on the table
in front of you. (These are your points!)

3. Discard- One card face up in your discard pile. (Be careful about the cards you discard or hold in your hand as they can be used against you!)

Players gain points by playing 3 or 4 card melds of moon phases & lunar event cards. The game is over when a player gets 354 points:

Why 354 points? That’s the number of days in a lunar year. At its core, the game revolves around the moon, ensuring that every aspect circles back to it.

13 Moons is filled with beautiful art by the game's creator, Mira Blackman. It's design embraces a soothing and uncomplicated aesthetic, with calming earthy tones.

It imitates the moons rhythm. The New Moon card is the darkest in the deck, representing the absence of the moon's radiance during this phase. As the moon progresses towards its full phase, each subsequent card gradually becomes lighter and more colorful until the Full Moon card, which is the lightest. Likewise the cards become darker once again as the moon's luminosity wanes during its return towards the New Moon phase.

The lunar event cards represent major and minor lunar events. Some of the events can be predicted while others can't. If you want the extra points for Moonbow or Earthshine you need get up out of your chair and go look at the moon!

I want to thank every single backer for making this game about our very favorite luminary come to life! To honor your support, every game copy will include an expansion deck of 13 Glossary Cards.  

The Glossary Cards are used as a visual reminder of where the moon is on the day you're playing and which is the Luminary Card (AKA Bonus Card). On the back of each card is a brief description of that lunar phase, it's themes and a question related to the moon. If inclined, you can read the card's reverse side, and invite players to contemplate or even share their responses. It's a nice way to build on the connection but also totally optional if you just feel like playing cards!

Stickers! Each deck will come with a pack of 5 stickers. Once the campaign is completed backers will receive a survey and vote on their favorite card art to determine which cards will be turned into stickers.

Originally, 13 Moons was conceived of and designed, with my children in mind. The game evolved to be an age 8+ play.  However, the deck still has features that make it adaptable for younger children to play and develop their connection with the moon.

The minimal artwork and numbers, for instance, make it great  for a lunar-themed game of Go Fish or Memory. This is a clip of my first time playing with my 4 year old. The conversation was sparked almost immediately!
